The whale jawbones that were once at Sandal Castle were removed to Thornes Park and are located at the entrance to one of the bowling greens. It’s possible that the bones were moved in the 1960s. The first photo is a postcard of Sandal Castle dated 1909 and the second is a present day picture.
Further research on where there are whale jawbones arches ini britain has revealed that in Yorkshire there are the local jawbones at Rothwell, Leeds, the famous ones at Whitby and a pair in Pickering Park, Hull. Further afield there is a jawbones arch at Chideok Manor in Dorset and an arch that is reduced in size outside Kendal. Scotland has whale jawbones in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and the Isle of Lewis.
