News- 26 March 24
Unfortunately the Friends of CHaT Parks are not going to be able to open the outdoor games as planned on Saturday (30th March) – the ground is already saturated and there is more rain planned before the weekend. We really need a prolonged dry spell before the area will be playable and so we will have to keep monitoring the ground conditions. As soon as we have more news it will be posted on the Facebook page and our website.

Wakefield Hospice 10k Run road closures
The Wakefield 10k Road Race and 1k Mini Run will take place on Sunday 24 March 2024 at 09:00, starting and finishing at Thornes Park, with a number of roads across the city fully or partially closed as runners pass through. A road closure will be in place on the route between 8.30am-11am with no vehicle movement allowed.nAll adjoining roads will be closed 8.30am-11am.
The road closure is from Quarry Hill, Horbury all along the A642 to St Michael’s Church (next to The Redoubt Pub, Wakefield) and includes Park Grove Road, Lawefield Lane and Park Avenue. The road closure will therefore also include the closure of Gill Sike Road, Gill Sike Bungalows, Thornbury Road, and all adjoining roads to the above.
Please note, access to Thornes Road will be allowed via a STOP/GO Traffic light system leading vehicles to-and- from Mount Crescent.
Access will end at Thornes Road/Horbury Road A642 next to West Wakefield Methodist Church.
Motorists needing to move their car from these areas during these road closures are advised to move their vehicles beforehand to a location that would ensure they are not blocked in. Bus routes will also be affected.
For those attending the Wakefield 10K, parking is available on the day at Trinity Cathedral Academy on Thornes Road, the Penny Appeal Campus in Thornes Park, for which you must enter from Thornes Lane, and in the Cineworld Car Park at Westgate Retail Park.
From running-enthusiasts to first-time entrants, for over 25 years the Wakefield 10K has welcomed a great mixture of runners, with each entrant having their own reason for getting involved and supporting Wakefield’s local hospice.

Spring is on the way but there’s been a mix of heavy rain, sunshine and low temperatures which have affected the usual activities. The Saturday parkrun and Sunday morning junior parkrun have continued whenever possible and the tennis courts remain open. Wakefield School of Tennis have restarted the free junior coaching for 8-13 year olds in the tennis courts in Thornes Park every Saturday afternoon 13.45-14.30 (https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/ThornesPark/Coaching/Junior). The Friends volunteers continue to tend the Secret Garden and the Aviary is always a pleasure to visit. On Sunday afternoons the miniature railway runs in Thornes Park by the children’s playground, weather permitting. There’s always plenty to do in the Park, whether you’re going for a stroll or being more energetic!
